e-Learning Resources: Books

Today, there are lots of books on e-learning. Here we share some of our top picks that we think are worth a read.

  e-Learning:
Strategies for Delivering Knowledge in the Digital Age

Marc J. Rosenberg, McGraw-Hill, 2001
Also available as an ebook
Outstanding overview of what e-learning means to the organization, how to maximize its potential and how to develop an effective e-learning strategy for your organization.

  Designing Web-Based Training
William Horton, John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 2000
Still my favourite book for designing web-based training, although it does not deal with communication tools. My 1st copy was so well used it was literally in shreds (had to buy a 2nd copy!)
The companion website contains interactive examples from the book:

  Implementing e-Learning
Jay Cross and Lance Dublin, ASTD, 2002
If you heard Cross and Dublin speak in the year before their book was published, you probably heard them validating their principles and asking for additional input. Learn practical strategies from these thought leaders.

  Leading e-Learning
William Horton, ASTD, 2001
I've taken workshops with Horton and followed his work for some time, and I'd buy anything written by him. ASTD contracted William Horton to write three of the seven books in it's E-Learning Series, a choice that speaks to Horton's expertise.

  Using e-Learning
William Horton, ASTD, 2001
See comments above under Leading e-Learning.

  Evaluating e-Learning
William Horton, ASTD, 2001
See comments above under Leading e-Learning.

  Designing e-Learning
Saul Carliner, ASTD, 2002
Carliner's earlier work, An Overview of Online Learning (see below) was very good, and it's great to see a new book by Carliner in the ASTD E-Learning Series.

  Project Managing e-Learning
Bill Shackelford, ASTD, 2002
Many organizations are finding they do not have the project management skills that are required to effectively lead e-learning projects that involve a team of specialists. A timely addition.

  Selling e-Learning
Darin E. Hartley, ASTD, 2001
Building a business case for e-learning and selling it to your organization's management are no small tasks! Hartley's book also includes tips for overcoming resistance and objections.

  An Overview of Online Learning
Saul Carliner, HRD Press, 1999
While written in 1999, still a good online learning primer for those brand new to online learning. Carliner is the author of numerous white papers, online courses and is a frequent speaker.

  Web-Based Training Cookbook
Brandon Hall, John Wiley and Sons, 1997
Once considered to be the e-learning "bible", the cookbook is getting dated, especially as it focuses on the technical aspects, which have evolved greatly. Hold off for a future addition.
